As 2024 draws near its conclusion, we have observed a notable surge in fragrance releases within the market. Perhaps this resurgence can be attributed to the prolonged confinement many of us experienced during 2020, or perhaps it reflects a genuine renaissance in the fragrance industry. Regardless of the cause, we find ourselves presented with an abundance of experiences to explore and savor throughout our lives.
To begin, I must highlight my absolute favorite fragrance: LIIS Bo and Ethereal Wave. With its captivating blend of tobacco leaves, incense, elemi, redwood pine, guaiac wood, and vanilla beans, wearing Bo feels akin to enveloping oneself in a warm, smoky embrace, as if a fire infused with elemi and vanilla bean is gently crackling nearby. In my view, there is truly no comparison; it leaves the most exquisite sillage as I stroll through the vibrant streets of New York. I discovered this enchanting fragrance in the charming shop Union, nestled in Venice, California, and I will forever cherish the serendipity of encountering such an ethereal scent.
On the other hand, I must mention LIIS Ethereal Wave. You might wonder why I have both fragrances; the answer lies in my decision to purchase the discovery set, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Although LIIS is priced at a premium, it envelops me in a sense that the fragrance becomes an integral part of my being, rather than merely something applied to the skin. Ethereal Wave is, in my view, a true chameleon; it begins as a bright bergamot citrus tea and swiftly evolves into a beautifully "clean" fragrance with a rich woody projection. This scent instills a serene balance within me, evoking a sense of both grounding and boldness—qualities I deeply cherish in a fragrance.
Next, I must highlight my latest acquisition: Orpheon by Diptyque. While Diptyque is a well-respected name in the fragrance industry, it’s a brand I had not previously explored. However, upon discovering Orpheon recently, I was instantly captivated. With its enchanting blend of tonka bean and juniper berries, this fragrance delivers an invigorating burst of freshness that awakens both the mind and body. Orpheon stands apart in its ability to evoke a clean, elevated essence. To me, it’s akin to the intimate experience of making love in the shower, with the alluring notes of tonka beans and juniper berries enveloping the space. That’s truly how I would encapsulate the essence of this scent.
Now, let’s turn to something more woody and warm. I must mention my two favorite fall scents: By the Fireplace by Maison Margiela and Somebody Wood by Phlur. By the Fireplace will always hold a special place in my heart, as it transports me to cherished moments with my boyfriend, Hayden. From the very first day we met, this fragrance has felt like the warmest embrace, as if it is intrinsically tied to him. Using cashmeran, By the Fireplace evokes the sensation of sitting beside a crackling fire on a crisp autumn night, with hints of vanilla dancing in the air. While it remains a beloved favorite, I tend to reserve it for moments when my boyfriend isn’t nearby.
In contrast, Somebody Wood by Phlur offers a compelling blend of leathery saffron and creamy sandalwood. This fragrance embodies warmth and daring allure, and intriguingly, it evokes memories of fall in the Great Smoky Mountains. As a Tennessee native, wearing this scent feels like a comforting hug from home, serene and reflective of the tranquil beauty of the Great Smokey Mountains. I can almost envision sitting by a fire with Dolly Parton, enveloped in the warmth of both the fragrance and the moment.
Now, let us delve into a scent that sparks much debate: From the Garden by Maison Margiela. Often labeled a "tomato fragrance," this scent invigorates my spirit in a profound way. Growing up in Tennessee, I spent several years living on a farm, and From the Garden instantly transports me to those golden afternoons after school, where I would revel in the sun-drenched garden alongside my dad and grandmother.
While some may argue that this fragrance is dominated by tomato notes—my boyfriend being among them, as he expresses his aversion whenever I wear it—I perceive it quite differently.
